In the early 2000s, Danny Boyle opted to use digital camcorders for filming his zombie invasion narrative, aiming to enhance realism by portraying the collapse of the modern world as though captured by protagonists using accessible tools. A sequel will soon be released under Danny Boyle's direction with Alex Garland writing the screenplay, marking 23 years since the original installment.

The series is entering a new phase, not only in terms of themes and stakes but also in technological advancements. The production now employs high-definition and professional equipment, including a format akin to 70mm. Despite this shift, there remains an integration of new consumer-grade devices.

The director has incorporated iPhones for a sequence inspired by a popular cultural reference. Given the prevalence of smartphones in daily filming, this choice is not unexpected. Last year, it was disclosed that an iPhone 15 Pro Max was utilized, though further details were not provided at that time. The director elaborates:

"There is an incredible shot in the second half of the film where we use the 20-camera rig. You will recognize it when you see it. It is a magnificent shot that uses this technique (20 cameras on a large set) and surprisingly transports you to a new world, rather than making you feel like you already know it."

This technique allows access to multiple viewpoints for action scenes, offering a 180-degree perspective that enables dynamic editing and perspective shifts. Additional scenes were filmed using iPhones with setups involving 8 to 10 smartphones.

Following 28 Years Later , Danny Boyle will have opportunities for further experimentation. Under Sony's auspices, the saga will continue with a new chapter directed by Nia DaCosta. The Bone Temple is scheduled for release in January 2026. While the plot remains undisclosed, it aims to expand on elements introduced in 28 Years Later . The upcoming film, featuring Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Jodie Cormer as survivors isolated on an island, will explore their discovery of mutated infected individuals on the mainland, complicating survival. 28 Years Later is set for release on Wed, Jun 18, 2025.
